South Korean company buys factory in Waynesboro

By Anne Marie Kyzer

Hiring should begin in the coming weeks for a company that plans to begin production in the Burke County Industrial Park.

Sam Dong, a South Korean based magnet wire manufacturer, announced that it has purchased the Waynesboro ASTA facility, which ceased production last October.

That plant, located on the northern end of the Burke Veterans Parkway, should be up and running again by the fall, according 60 workers within the next two months. Several key positions have already been filled, and the workforce is expected to grow to 150 when the site reaches full production.

Sam Dong will continuously transposed conductors, an electrical winding material used in power transformers.

ASTA had set up the plant for the same purpose in 2008, but the recession and issues with quality eventually led to its closure.

Sam Dong already has a similar plant in Tennessee that has reached full capacity since beginning production in 2007, and a three-year-old plant in Ohio that produces specialized copper products.

The company’s purchase of the 200,000-square foot facility here will allow it to expand its production of continuously transposed conductors and take advantage of growth in the energy industry in North America, according to formal announcement posted on its website.

Burke County Development Authority Chairman W.H.”Dub” Harper Jr. said he was glad to see a new industry come so quickly after ASTA’s departure.

“It will be a good fit and we were very fortunate to have this company come to Waynesboro,” he said.

Sam Dong, which was established in 1977, is considered one of the world’s leading magnet wire manufacturers and specializes in engineered products for the electrical coil winding industry. The company has another plant in South Korea along with its headquarters.

Chris Cummiskey, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, said this could bode well for future industry recruitment.

“We are certainly pleased that Sam Dong will be locating in Burke County and creating jobs,”he said. “Having an international company in your region provides a great foundation for attracting attention from other such companies looking for exceptional workforce and other business assets."
